Product Description

Apricot Pit / Shell Activated Carbon

Active carbon from apricot pits

Abstract

High quality active carbon can be produced from apricot pits. This carbon shows adsorption properties that compare favorably with commercial active carbons produced, e.g., from coconut shell. The shell of the apricot pit is an ideal raw material for active carbon because of its high carbon and low ash content. The pyrolysis at 700 °C for 30 min produced the coke with a yield of 25 w/w%. The coke activated at 900 °C for 60 min in an equimolar steam-nitrogen mixture has a specific surface area as high as 980 m2/g (nitrogen, BET) and an average pore radius of 1.4 nm. Its mesopore volume can be characterized with a methylene blue value of 13 g/100 g. The mainly microporous character of this carbon can be shifted towards mesopore range when the time of activation is increased.
